Stranded’s Awesome: The Kootenays

For the record, it has been much too long since I was on this ferry run.  In fact, the first picture shows a much more modern ferry than I ever recall being on as we used to cross Kootenay Lake.

Welcome to the Kootenays.

The Kootenays are a particular range within the mighty Canadian Rocky Mountains.  These are my mountains.

My dad grew up in this range.  Also, I lived there as a boy from 13 to 16 years old in the town called Creston.

Creston is a town of about 5000 that is best known for logging, apples and Kokanee Beer.  It is a six hour drive west from my hometown of Calgary.  Getting rather high up into the heart of the Rockies to get there.

Across Kootenay Lake is another town called Nelson.  Nelson is where I would like to retire, if I ever get to that point.  A beautiful mountainside town where they filmed the Steve Martin/Darryl Hannah comedy, Roxannne.

Anyhow, if nothing else, Mother Nature’s beauty is on display…and if you want to visit one of Canada’s less than well known spots, I highly recommend this area just for the scenic drive if nothing else.

Speaking of which, I do need to go back there sometime.
